An original illustration by Arthur Rackham, 'Adrift' plate 16 from  the first edition of his Book of Pictures  published in 1913. The illustration is from 'The Snow Queen' by Hans Christian Andersen.
 
Signed and dated lower right in the print 'Arthur Rackham 1909'.
 
This was a 'tipped in' print, attached by hand to a page left blank during printing. It is still hinge mounted to the original backing page. The original titled tissue guard has been preserved behind the picture below the backing of the frame. The old mount was highly acidic and was beginning to damage the print so a new conservation grade mount protects the print. 
 
The frame is an original period example with a wooden back held in place by little swivelling hooks.
