Ilfracomb on the Coast of North Devon
This view of Ilfracomb on the North Devon coast comes from the publication, A Voyage round Great Britain undertaken in the summer of 1813 and commencing from the Land's End, Cornwall. In 1813 William Daniell embarked on a journey round the coast of Great Britian and made drawings of the scenery and significant ports. While inland areas had been well recorded, apart from fashionable seaside resorts, the coast of Britain had been largely neglected and it was Daniell's intention to fill this gap. He had already had some success with Oriental Scenery, a magnificent collection of views from India published from drawing which he made with his uncle Thomas on their extensive travels in India between 1784 and 1794. His series of tours round Britain were published between 1814 and 1825 in eight volumes and included 308 aquatints.
The work was succesful both financially and in artistic circles and Daniell was elected Royal Academician in 1822.
